WhatsApp Web Without Saving a Number

On the desktop the contact picker is the only visible way to start a conversation, so people assume they have to save the number first. They don't — the browser can address a chat directly.

Why the web app hides this

WhatsApp Web mirrors the chat list on your phone and reads contact names from it. It has no field for a raw number because the interface assumes you already know the person. The underlying service does not share that assumption: it addresses everyone by phone number.

Opening a chat in the browser

  1. Sign in at web.whatsapp.com once, so the browser holds the session.
  2. In the same browser, open https://wa.me/<number> using the country code and no leading zero — for example https://wa.me/212612345678.
  3. Choose "continue to chat", then the web option rather than the desktop app.
  4. Check the digits in the conversation header before typing.

The link generator builds the URL for you and handles the country code, which is where most failed attempts come from.

The desktop app

The native macOS and Windows apps register the whatsapp:// scheme, so a wa.me link may open there instead of your browser tab. Both work; if you want the browser specifically, dismiss the app prompt and pick "use WhatsApp Web".

A bookmark that always works

Save https://wa.me/ as a bookmark and edit the URL each time you need a new number. It is crude but takes two seconds, and nothing is stored anywhere except your bookmark bar.

When the phone is faster

Editing URLs is fine for one number a week. For a stream of numbers across countries — a supplier in one, a customer in another — retyping the link is slower than a keypad with a country picker and a recents list. That is what Click to Chat does on iPhone, without an entry in your address book.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp Web let me start a chat with an unsaved number?

Not from its own interface — the new chat panel only lists existing contacts and conversations. You start the chat by opening a wa.me link in the same browser, which hands the number to the web client.

Do I need my phone connected?

WhatsApp Web works with multi-device, so your phone can be offline. The account still has to be linked to that browser first.

Why does the link open the download page instead of my chat?

Usually because you are not signed in to web.whatsapp.com in that browser, or the number is not in international format.

Can I pre-fill a message from the desktop?

Yes. Append ?text= and your URL-encoded message to the wa.me link, or build it with the link generator.
